Using qué? and cuál?

For those struggling with ¿qué? and ¿cuál? here there are some guidelines that will help you.

Basically, use ¿qué? to mean what? when you are asking for a definition or an explanation. Use ¿cuál? to mean what? in all other circumstances.
¿Qué?
Asks for a definition or an explanation.

¿Qué es esto?
What is this?

¿Qué quieres?
What do you want?

¿Qué haces?
What do you do?

¿Qué?
Can be directly followed by a noun.
¿Qué coche prefieres?
What (which) car do you prefer?

¿Qué restaurante te gusta más?
What (Which) restaurant do you like most?

¿Qué libro lees?
What (Which) book do you read?

¿Cuál?
Expresses what? or which? in all other cases.
¿Cuál es el libro más interesante?
What (which) is the most interesting book?

¿Cuál es tu equipo favorito?
What (Which) is your favorite team?

¿Cuál es la capital de México?
What is the capital of Mexico?

¿Cuál es tu (número de) teléfono?
What is your phone number?
